About Abbey Road Artists Studios
Abbey Road Artists’ Studios is a creative hub in Athlone, offering a welcoming space for artists, creative practitioners, and community groups. Our residencies support contemporary visual artists to create new work, carry out research, develop professionally, collaborate with peers, receive support from the Luan Gallery team, and opportunities to connect with the public.
Housed in a unique heritage building with a rich history, Abbey Road Artists Studios has served many purposes since the 1800s. Built as a Workhouse in 1841 at a cost of £7,500, it originally accommodated up to 900 people.
More recently, it was Athlone Fire Station before being transformed into artists’ studios and a community cultural space in 2011 through a joint initiative between Athlone Town Council and the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport.
We have four individual artist studios and a large community space. This space is available for a wide range of activities, including exhibitions, workshops, classes, talks, events, and creative projects for the local community.
