Mimi Seery
“The projects I delivered during my residency at Abbey Road continuously put focus on public wellbeing in times of uncertainty and trauma.
After so many enjoyable events on my residency, I felt compelled to direct my research on the very building from which I worked from. Abbey Road Artist Studios is part of the former Athlone Workhouse, opening in 1841, four years before The Great Hunger (An Gorta Mor).
In the coming year I will be reaching out to local community groups and arts workers in the town of Athlone with an aim to develop a project inspired by the publication ‘Athlone Workhouse and the Famine’ by Gearoid O’Brien and Brendan O’Brien.
Myself and Gearoid O’Brien invite participants from the local community to take part in an Art and Heritage workshop at Abbey Road Studios, Athlone. This immersive workshop is centered around acknowledging our past through stories of the Workhouse, group discussion, and finally art making. “
