The Irish Names Project

The Irish Names Project was founded in 1990 by Mary Shannon (1947-2020) to honour and remember those who died from AIDS related illnesses. Building a community this way also gave space for many to share personal stories and grieve over those they had lost to AIDS related illnesses in a social climate of stigmatisation and secrecy. Quilts were made by the project participants were either dedicated to an individual or a group of people. They are often decorated with personal objects or memorabilia.
