Clonmacnoise

One of Ireland’s most famous monastic sites, Clonmacnoise was founded in 544 by Saint Ciarán and lies along the banks of the River Shannon, just south of Athlone. The remarkable ruins include a cathedral, two round towers, three high crosses, nine churches, and over 700 early Christian graveslabs, with an on-site visitor centre bringing the site’s history to life.
